Virtual Reality

English language only.

By means of this minor, students are given an oppertunity to get hands-on experience with the broad area of Virtual Reality. The minor covers technology aspects (3D graphics, visualisation, IO-devices/systems), human aspects (behavior, presence, illusion) and design aspects (content, interaction, animation).

"There is a great scope of developments in the human applications field. More than just visualisation techniques, we aim to organise sessions on how one can train professionals, how ergonomics can be tested, how applications can influence the human brain."

Martijn Lamers – lecturer

Content

  • To understand the technologies, underlying principles, potential, and limits of VR,
  • To examine the computer hardware and software technologies that are used to build VR environments,
  • To get hands on experience with 3D graphics techniques (modelling and programming) and issues,
  • To investigate the human factor issues in virtual environment,
  • To learn about immersive, 3D human natural interaction techniques and issues,
  • To investigate state of the art Virtual Reality concept and technologies,
  • To gain practical experience in designing, implementing, and evaluating a virtual environment.

The project assignments are real questions from a company or organisation and these companies actively participate in the project.

Projects

Firefighting Simulator

During this project we will make a virtual fire fighter simulation. The reason why, is because we strongly believe that a virtual fire fighter simulation could help educating new trainees. It would also be cheaper than doing real life training, since it wouldn’t require a separate location and resources to create a real fire. Furthermore it would be easier to change the situation the user would experience. In this article we shall inform you about the basic plan of the project and the requirements for the project. We will also inform you about the limitations of what we are going to do, what we will not do, and the risks involved during the project.

Virtual Archery

In the physical world, the user is equipped with a real compounded bow and arrow. The hardware bow uses tracking devices, that measure position and angle of the bow.
User is equiped with a HMD (head-mounted display), a modern helmet with a screen, so the viewer will see the virtual surroundings, as if he is physically present in this virtual world.
This enables an optimal experience for the user.
